MSNBC Host Says Democrats Won’t Defeat Trump In 2020 With A Black Guy Or A Woman

Appearing as a panelist on MSNBC’s Hardball, political analyst Jason Johnson said the Democratic Party is wasting its time if it thinks its gonna beat Republican President Donald Trump in 2020 by nominating either a Black guy or a woman to take him on.

“2020 is not the year where the Democrats can run a woman and win,” Johnson said. “2020 is not the year where Democrats can run a black person and win. They’re going to have to run a white guy and it’s going to be a white guy.”

Johnson, who is also the politics editor at The Root, went on to add:

“Terry McAuliffe. Joe Biden. Those are the only real candidates that Democrats have if they’re going to run against Donald Trump in 2020. This is a crucial election. We have seen what has happened in this country and how conversations and narratives have been transformed with him only being in office for 18 months. 2020 is not the year where the Democrats can run a woman and win. 2020 is not the year where Democrats can run a black person and win. They’re going to have to run a white guy and it’s going to be a white guy”.

Several leading potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates are Black, or female, or in the case of California Senator Kamala Harris, both.

But…hold up a minute: not all analysts share Johnson’s view.

Many political watchers argue that Democrats will need to rebuild the “Obama Coalition” that helped former President Barack Obama win the White House twice, and, they say, that may only be possible if Democrats nominate a woman or a person of color.
