Flashback Friday…Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz: Bia Bia

Before there was the Migos, Future, 21 Savage, or even Snap–there was Crunk, and Lil Jon was the undisputed King of it.

Atlanta native Lil Jon and his homeboys formed a musical group in the early 1990s that would later become Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz, a chart-topping group that changed the course and sound of late 1990s-early 2000s Hip Hop.

Jon had worked as a DJ for the city’s famed So So Def Records beginning in 1993, a time when both the label and the city of Atlanta emerged as central components in Urban music.

A decade later, Lil Jon and the term “Crunk” were synonymous.

And “Bia Bia” became one of Lil Jon’s signature hits.

Hits came strong and fast during Lil Jon’s run, and anybody who needed a hit in the first half of the 2000s seemed to turn to Lil Jon.

But music changed in the second half of the 2000s, and Crunk was soon DOA.

Lil Jon, however, never stopped working, although his unmistakable raspy voice was heard far less often on radio.

These days, Lil Jon, 47, still makes appearances and is undeniably one of rap’s most crucial pioneers.
