Docuseries “Breaking The Band: N.W.A.” To Look Closer At What Drove Iconic Group Apart

REELZ Network’s Breaking The Band docuseries will take a look at what broke up iconic West Coast rap group N.W.A. in an episode airing July 1.

In 2015, a film based on the group, Straight Outta Compton, became a box office smash and instant cult classic that gave moviegoers some insight into how the group came together–but left a lot of questions over what really drove them apart.

Breaking The Band:N.W.A. makes the case that Hollywood, and its distractions and temptations, were at the center of the group’s dissolution.

“We were ghetto children. When we met Jerry (former manager Jerry Heller), we were eating at five-star restaurants, learning how to eat seven-course meals, and traveling around the world,” says Dr. Dre’s ex-girlfriend, Michel’le, in one of the show’s teasers.

Jerry Heller is credited with steering the group to commercial success while simultaneously being blamed for being the wedge that ultimately drove the group apart. Heller passed away in 2016.

“The parties that we had… oh my god There’s nothing like N.W.A…I’m sorry. N.W.A. group is where you can do anything. You got to the lobby of a hotel, you didn’t have a problem getting laid,” adds rapper and producer Cold 187um.

“I mean, I was Arabian Prince, so I had women throwing their clothes at me all the time,” recalls the N.W.A founding member.

“Breaking the Band: NWA” airs Sunday, July 1, at 10:00 ET / PT on REELZ.
