Anita Baker Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award at BET Awards

R&B and Soul legend Anita Baker was in the house yesterday at the 18th annual BET Awards.

The legendary songstress was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and used her speech to encourage her fellow artists to keep the music playing.

“I would ask that the music be allowed to play, that singers are allowed to sing, and rappers are allowed to rap, and poets are allowed to rhyme,” said Baker, who also was honored by singer and host Jamie Foxx, Ledisi and Marsha Ambrosius–in addition to a song sang by gospel great Yolanda Adams in tribute to Baker.

Anita Baker is a multi-Grammy winning singer whose sound has been described as a lavish mix of Soul, R&B, Jazz and even Funk.

Baker, 60, is on her “Anita Baker Farewell Tour”, which she says will be her last. She has several dates marked for this summer.

Baker announced her retirement in a New Year’s Day tweet.
